The Bride Asked Me to Leave Her Wedding.
Then the groom saw me.
Sera had come to the church because her mother had asked her to, in the specific way her mother asked for things, which was by describing the errand as though it belonged to somebody else.
Her mother was ninety minutes late, and the wedding started on time, and Sera ended up standing at the back.
She had not seen Marc in four years. She had not seen him since the week in Lisbon, when he had asked her a question she was not able to answer at twenty-three and had been able to answer ever since.
The bride noticed her before the ceremony. She came down the side aisle in the silk shoes, paused, and said it pleasantly, because that is how the worst things are said.
“I’d rather you weren’t here,” she said. “For both of us.”
“Of course,” Sera said, and turned around.
She had one hand on the heavy church door when the groom came out of the vestry.
He stopped in the middle of the aisle.
He said her name like a question.
Four years, two continents, and a wedding she was not invited to — and the one person in the room who had never stopped looking.
